Teatro Paraguas presents
Elliot: A Soldier’s Fugue
By Quiara Alegría Hudes
Directed by Alix Hudson
Teatro Paraguas presents Elliot: A Soldier’s Fugue as part of a collaboration with Ironweed Productions and the Santa Fe Playhouse to bring Quiara Alegría Hudes’ three-play cycle, The Elliot Trilogy, to Santa Fe! In Elliot: A Soldier’s Fugue, Hudes takes a poignant look at the way war permeates our lives. Hudes’ spare, intense, and poetically resonant play speaks to the personal cost of war across the ages, spanning three generations of a Puerto Rican-American family. Elliot is a Marine Corps hero back from Iraq, his Pop was wounded in Vietnam, and his flute-playing Grandpop fought in Korea. In a fugue-like form, different wars and different tales are strung together as Ginny, his mother who was an army nurse in Viet Nam, seeks to reconcile the disparate parts and heal emotional wounds.
And don't miss the opportunity to see the entire Trilogy, which also includes Water by the Spoonful (Ironweed Productions) and The Happiest Song Plays Last (The Santa Fe Playhouse). The three plays follow Elliot Ortiz from the battlegrounds of Iraq, to a Subway sandwich shop in his home of Philadelphia, to his roots in Puerto Rico, and back to the Middle East to confront a past that has haunted him since the war. The plays span four generations and over 60 years, exploring the impacts of war and addiction on families and how redemption can be found within intergenerational care, compassion, and wisdom.
September 26th will begin a rolling three-week run of each play in the trilogy: Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue opens September 26, Water by the Spoonful opens October 3 and The Happiest Song Plays Last opens October 10. The weekend of October 10, all three plays will be running concurrently. Thus, audience members will have the opportunity to see the trilogy over five weekends, or, if they are visiting tourists, the opportunity to see the trilogy within the space of one weekend.
