In Memoriam: Sallie Bingham
(1937 - 2025)

Sally Bingham was many things–a talented writer, editor, advocate of land preservation, feminist, and even more, a strong, fun and articulate woman. We in the theatre community were blessed with her staunch support and her loss will be profoundly felt.

~ Kita Mehaffy, President
Theatre Santa Fe

I, and Ironweed, are deeply grateful for Sallie Bingham's kind support of our productions over the past 10 years as well as her thoughtful feedback and ideas for how to continue our storytelling mission. Sallie was a fierce supporter of theater and the Performing Arts in the best sense of the word, and I was, and still am, inspired by her tenacity, her generosity, and her passion.

~ Scott Harrison, Founding Artistic Director
Ironweed

Sallie Bingham was a rare one. Over the years, we had many deep conversations about content, form, and inspiration. Theater Grottesco was able to continue developing and sharing our work with Santa Fe audiences, and those around the globe, thanks to Sallie and the many donors who have joined her. There are not words to express our gratitude. If only more of us had her unwavering commitment to truth, beauty, art and justice.

~ John Flax, Founding Artistic Director
Theater Grottesco

One of the first people I contacted once we had decided to create the New Mexico Actors Lab was Sallie Bingham, who soon became one of our strongest supporters. We often discussed the shows we were doing and theater in general, about which she was passionate and knowledgeable. I read several of her own plays and was eager to produce a fascinating one about the poet Ezra Pound. A lesser artist might have jumped at the chance, but despite my enthusiasm Sallie was concerned about the possible backlash to Pound's notorious antisemitism and was loath to risk anything that might harm the theater. Such was her lack of ego and abundance of integrity. Her passing came as a terrible shock and a profound loss to our community, our theater, and to me personally.

~ Robert Benedetti, Founder
NM Actors Lab
