Day of the Dead Community Celebration
Teatro Paraguas and Casablanca Studios present the Fifth Annual El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) community celebration with an exciting line-up of live music, a puppet play, staged cuentos (folk-tales), a medley of songs from the movie Coco, and a short classic comedy.
Thelma Arguello directs the classic puppet play from Mexico entitled Don Juan Tenorio, the world’s most famous lover, who laughs at Fate—until Fate has the last laugh.
JoJo Sena de Tarnoff directs a stage version of a story by Francisco Garzón Céspedes, a storyteller, poet, and theatre director of Spanish descent born in Camaguey, Cuba in 1947. The story is entitled Francisca y la Muerte (Francisca and Lady Death), in which La Muerte is always a step behind her intended victim.
A traditional Latin American story, La Mulata de Córdoba, will be staged under the direction of Argos MacCallum. A beautiful and mysterious woman comes to Mexico City from Córdoba and begins to help all the men with their worries and problems—until they suspect she might be a witch because of her uncanny powers.
The Teatro Paraguas Orchestra will perform a medley of songs, including Remember Me, Un Poco Loco, and La Llorona rom the movie Coco, accompanied by young dancers choreographed by Xochi Ehrl of Casablanca Studios.
A short comedy written in 1914 by the popular Spanish playwrights Joaquin and Serafin Alvarez-Quintero, entitled A Sunny Morning, will also be performed: An old man and an old woman, well into their seventies, must share a park bench; they discover they had been lovers in their youth.
An altar to honor los antepasados, those who came before, will be set up in the lobby of Teatro Paraguas, and the public is invited to add mementos and photographs to honor their own relatives.
