Begun as a thesis project by Tebelak at Carnegie-Mellon University, it was brought to off-Broadway and re-scored by Stephen Schwartz (who also wrote “Pippin” and “Wicked” and several other shows). The musical is structured as a series of parables, primarily based on the Gospel of Matthew. The parables are interspersed with music, some set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns. It was brought to Broadway in 1976 where it was nominated for a Tony Award and ran for over 500 performances.
Featuring a talented cast of local performers (Evan Aguilar, Anna Balsamo, Andy Bornman, Rikki Carroll, Caye Duran, Lisa Friedland, Marina Heaney, Hannah Machado, Owen Margaret-Verrett, Ian Noble, Nadine Pineda, Camille Sammeth, Julie Shapiro, Bear Schacht, and Carlos Vazquez Baur), the production is Directed by Marilyn Barnes with Kathlene Ritch as Musical Director and accompanist extraordinaire. Sarah Leblanc is the Technical Director, and costumes are by Anne de May of Costumes! Ltd.
