DETAILS:
Yazzie (Meskwaki/Dine) is an actor, performing artist, and world-champion Men’s fancy dancer who is recognized for his skills in Men’s Northern Style Traditional dance and Eagle dance. In his SWAIA Performance, he will perform the Eagle dance and talk about the aesthetics and symbolism of Native American dancing and musical styles. He will also talk about his traditional upbringing.

Yazzie founded the Native Pride Dancers of Native Pride Productions, based in St. Paul, Minnesota. He began dancing at age 7 and began competing as a fancy dancer when he was 15. Yazzie is a two-time world-champion fancy dancer and has been awarded top-honors at powwows across the United States and Canada. He has performed at the Olympic Games, the Kennedy Center, and the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC, and with such bands and musical artists as Dirtwire and Portugal the Man. His film roles include The Canyonlands (2021), Ghost Warrior (2021) and Coyotaje (2018).

SWAIA Performances showcase local, regional, and national indigenous performing talent, including dancers, poets, and musicians. SWAIA Performances are co-curated by Goiyo Perez, a performing arts coordinator working with SWAIA, and Robyn Rikoon, artistic director of the Santa Fe Playhouse.
