SHORT SUMMARY: One of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, TWELFTH NIGHT’s 16 performances in the Santa Fe Botanical Garden will celebrate Santa Fe Classic Theater’s fifth year of live SHAKESPEARE IN THE GARDEN, July 25 – August 18, 2024.
FULL SUMMARY: To celebrate its fifth year of producing SHAKESPEARE IN THE GARDEN, Santa Fe Classic Theater will present one of Shakespeare’s greatest and most popular comedies, TWELFTH NIGHT (OR WHAT YOU WILL). 16 performances will present the beautiful Viola, shipwrecked on the foreign shore of Illyria where she fears her beloved twin brother, Sebastian, may have drowned. Dressing as a boy to protect herself under the disguised name of Cesario, she becomes a page for the highly romantic duke of Illyria, Orsino, who is himself hopelessly in love with the disdainful Lady Olivia. Viola falls for Orsino; using Cesario as his go-between, Olivia falls for handsome Cesario. Meanwhile, an entire hilarious sub-plot involves the “downstairs” household: the machinations of Olivia’s kinsman, Sir Toby Belch (Hamilton Turner), his friend and gull, Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Maria the plotting maid and the bittersweet fool, Feste, plus the ambitious Malvolio, the pretentious steward running Olivia’s household. A whole raft of secrets and lies will have to be cleared up before love can make it’s mark! Starring Emily Rankin, Hannah Machado, Hania Stocker, Myriah Duda, Hamilton Turner, Joey Beth Gilbert, Jeff Dolecek, and the SFCT players.
Twelfth Night was a major hit for Shakespeare from February, 1602 to the present day, and is often considered -as shown in the movie, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE – to be the Bard’s most poetic serial love story. Meet us under the stars in the Santa Fe Botanical Garden to get your annual share of beautiful costumes, original live music, witty repartee, beautiful surroundings, happy and sad songs, in that unique Shakespearean blend! Directed by Kelly Kiernan; costumes by Cheryl Odom; original music by Sitara Schauer.
