Teatro Paraguas presents
La Casa de Bernarda Alba (staged reading in Spanish)
Federico Garcia Lorca finished writing La Casa de Bernarda Alba two months before his assassination in 1936. Upon her second husband's death, domineering matriarch Bernarda Alba imposes an eight-year mourning period on her household in accordance with her family tradition. Bernarda has five daughters, aged between 20 and 39, whom she has rigidly controls and prohibits from any form of relationship. Angustias, Bernarda's daughter from the first marriage, is sickly but is the only one with a dowry. She is engaged with Pepe el Romano (whom we never see). Pepe is having a secret affair with the youngest daughter, Adela. Tensions arise with tragic consequences.
