Stephen Sondheim’s songs illustrate Life Ever After for favorite Grimm’s fairy tale characters.
Into the Woods is the great 1986 Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The tales are tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife – their quest to begin a family, their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them, and encounters with other storybook characters during their journey. The show covers multiple themes: growing up, parents and children, accepting responsibility, morality, and finally, wish fulfillment and its consequences.
