The Importance of Being Earnest
By Oscar Wilde
Crows' Nest at La Tienda in Eldorado, 7 Caliente Road, Building 1, Santa Fe
In matters of love, honesty is a luxury few can afford.
Two casts of young actors present Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. The play is a satire of Victorian high society. Two bachelors lead double lives to escape social obligations, each adopting the alias “Ernest”. Their tangled web of lies spirals into hilarious chaos when their deceptions inevitably collide.
The play's enduring brilliance lies in how it turns Victorian morality, marriage, and class structures on their head. Rather than celebrating sincerity, Wilde uses rapid-fire wit and biting epigrams to show how society itself is built on shallow artifice. The pun on the name "Ernest" and the word "earnest" serves as the ultimate joke about the hypocrisy of social decorum.
