Stories from an American Prison: the human side of incarceration

Ironweed Productions and Teatro Paraguas presents a staged reading of riveting monologues of American prison life, written by Gary Farlow, an incarcerated man serving out a forty year sentence in the North Carolina prison system. The winner of the 2025 PEN America Prison Writing Contest for Drama, Farlow’s stories are by turns deeply poignant, funny, thought-provoking, heartening and unsettling. Alexander Lane directs ten fine actors to give voice to people whose experiences of life in America are seldom heard. Emery Barrera, Rudy (Froggy) Fernandez, Jorge Gonzalez, Darci Gutierrez, David Jondreau, John Macker, Marcos Maez, Matt O'Reilly, Joaquin Rodriguez and former Santa Fe poet laureate, Darryl Lorenzo Wellington.

For the last decade, Farlow has mentored other inmates in a creative writing program and is the longtime editor of the prison newsletter.

Proceeds from this reading will benefit Living with Convictions, a non-profit based in North Carolina that provides support and resources to men transitioning into society
