The Adobe Rose Theatre is proud to announce that it is part of a nationwide network of more than sixty theatres reading award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson’s searing new unpublished play about domestic violence and gun control, Natural Shocks.
Named the “Most Produced Playwright in America” in 2018 (and second in 2017) by American Theatre Magazine, Gunderson is waiving royalties for readings of her new work the weekend of April 20, 2018—the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting and the day of the National School Walkout—to raise awareness about gun violence. The Adobe Rose will be donating all proceeds from this one-time-only production to the Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund for the victims of the Parkland shooting in Florida, as well as to Casa Familia, a domestic violence shelter for women and children in Santa Fe.
Based on Hamlet’s “To be or not to be,” Natural Shocks is a 65-minute one-woman tour-de-force that revolves around a woman waiting out an imminent tornado in her basement. Her monologue overflows with quirks, stories, and a final secret that puts the reality of guns into sharp focus. The play is part confessional, part stand up, and part reckoning.
Directed by Kristin Goodman, with Alexandra Renzo, BJ Stokey, Kathi Collins, Stefany G. Burrowes, Kristin Hansen, Reyna Valladarez, Samantha Orner, Robyn Reede, Talia Pura, Marianna Gallegos, and Frida Mercury.
The reading will be followed by a talk-back for interested audience members.
Gunderson is one of America’s most promising young playwrights. She recently received her second Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award at the Humana Festival in Louisville for The Book of Will. She received the prestigious award in 2014 for her play I and You.
