Exploring Anton Chekov’s Uncle Vanya: A Two-Part Series

Part 1 – Vanya on 42nd Street

As the TLC steering committee searched for good productions of great plays online, we found three very different but wonderful versions of Uncle Vanya, the timeless play by Anton Chekov.  We felt that viewing all three variations could give some wonderful insights into playwriting, directing, and acting.  Vanya on 42nd Street will lead off in April, and in May, Jay O Sanders’ production of a new translation of Uncle Vanya will be paired with Chekov’s earliest version of that play, The Wood Demon, produced by the BBC.

Vanya on 42nd Street is a Louis Malle film of a 1994 stage production directed by Andre Gregory.   It stars a young Julianne Moore with Wallace Shawn as Vanya and is framed as a rehearsal run-through.  You can view the video via Amazon for $3.99 for a 48-hour rental.

Local playwright Leslie Harrell Dillen will be moderating our April discussion.
