Poetry and a Prostitute: A Tribute to Tony Mares

Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 6-7 p.m.

Teatro Paraguas, 3205 Calle Marie, Santa Fe

Inspired by old prostitutes he knew as a youth during the 1940s in Albuquerque’s Old Town, Tony Mares wrote “Lola’s Last Dance.” In the Theatre Lovers Club’s Oct. 11 talk, director Paola Vengoechea Martini will reveal to us how the cast at Teatro Paraguas is bringing to life Lola and the many lively ghosts who populated her colorful past.

In a tribute to Mares, a poet, actor, playwright, historian, professor and more, that play will be paired with “Astonishing Light,” poems of imaginary conversations between Mares and woodcarver Patrocino Barela, which touch on life, love, artistic creation and Pablo Neruda’s pink pigs of dawn. Director Argos MacCallum will offer insights on Mares and his poetry, which will be published in a book this year. The performances hit the stage Oct. 13-23, join us for this talk to get a taste – both salty and sweet – of what to expect.

No charge, but donations are welcome. RSVP at theatresantafe.org/rsvp
